Outdoor culture and the mainstream: a debate on brand growth and identity with Brandwave in Riva del Garda
In recent years, gorpcore, the fashion trend that elevates technical hiking and climbing clothing to everyday urban style, is perhaps the most evident reflection of how outdoor culture is growing in the mainstream world. That’s why, on Monday, May 18 at 10 am in the Theatre room, Dan Macaulay, founder of Brandwave Marketing, will lead a panel that goes straight to the heart of the transformation with the panel “The Mainstreaming of Outdoor Culture: Balancing the Risk and Reward”.
The workshop will revolve around a fundamental question: is the rise of outdoor culture in the mainstream sustainable growth or the beginning of a dilution of the brand? An open discussion that will feature the founder of the internationally recognized B Corp certified agency for its work in sports and outdoor marketing. In the workshop led by Dan Macaulay along with representatives of some of the leading global brands in the sports sector, an attempt will be made to investigate the benefits and risks of this growth, but above all its consequences for brands, markets, and cultural identity.
The starting point is what until a few years ago was a niche related to the mountains, trails, or endurance sports and has now become everyday language: trail shoes on the Paris Fashion Week runway, sports smartwatches in managerial contexts, and water bottles transformed into true status symbols.
Outdoor, from subculture to global phenomenon
The panel will compare different perspectives on a theme that now crosses the entire outdoor and sports sector, such as the commercial potential of mass expansion but also the cultural risk of the so-called “selling out”, passing through case studies of brands that have experienced a boom (or decline) when they have embraced this new trend.
A debate that promises to be direct, without formulaic responses, with the aim of understanding an irreversible transformation that makes us realize how today outdoor is not just performance, but also cultural identity and aesthetic consumption. As the panel concept summarizes, the real question is no longer whether sports have become mainstream, but whether they can truly sustain this transformation without losing their essence.
Speaker Dan Macaulay
Leading the discussion will be Dan Macaulay, founder of Brandwave Marketing, a globally recognized B Corp certified agency for its work in sports and outdoor marketing. Entrepreneur and investor, Macaulay has built his career on the idea that the most effective marketing in sports comes from a genuine understanding of the community, because those who communicate are part of that same culture. An approach that has guided Brandwave in collaborations with some of the most influential brands in the industry.
Before founding the agency, he served as European marketing director for O’Neill, contributing to the brand’s development and its categories in Europe. Today he is also an international speaker, with appearances at events like Web Summit and for global entities like Amazon, where he addresses topics related to branding, cultural relevance, and the future of sports.
In addition to his consulting work, he is active as a mentor for startups and ambassador for initiatives related to the outdoor world and social innovation. The event in Riva del Garda is therefore part of a key moment for the entire sector, namely when outdoor, from a niche culture, has become a global language. And precisely for this reason, increasingly complex to interpret.
